On February 14, 2024, new Hispanic Nation Bar Foundation (HNBF) President Justin Carlson was interviewed by Law360’s Matt Perez.  The full interview was published on February 16 and can be accessed by Law360 subscribers using the link below.  The following are highlights from the article:

Hispanic Bar Foundation President Talks DEI in 2024

Perez: Since 2020, it seems companies are reversing DEI initiatives. Do you see that as well, and what do you think of the state of DEI going into 2024?

Carlson: “You see the law firms figuring out how to redo some of the fellowships and stuff that they’ve offered to encourage diversity. It’s a reorientation: you’re not changing the mission, you’re not abandoning the mission, you’re just going about it in a different way.”

Perez: In the legal industry, do you see it being more of a pipeline issue or an issue with company leadership having to change their ways and elevate attorneys from marginalized backgrounds? Or is it both?

Carlson: “[Students who are first in their families in college or law school] haven’t figured out the path to get into these more prominent positions, and that’s the kind of stuff [where] these pipeline programs and these foundations like ours really do make a difference, because there’s no other avenue for people to get that really useful insight.”
